Tocando para os Orixás

Playing for the Orixás.

The Orixás, the dieties of the candomblé religion, are summoned to ceremonies using the sacred music and rhythms of candomblé.

There is no better person to learn this from than Bira.

Learn the rhythms of candomble music from a Brazilian native with more than 20 years of experience playing the sacred rhythms inside a candomblé house.

As alabé of Terreiro Ile Axê Omim Jo’ba, Bira’s function inside the candomblé house is the head musician. He is the primary caretaker for the atabaques (drums) and is responsible for the music during the candomblé ceremonies — from song selection to leading each song throughout the ceremony.

Filled with rich percussion, this is the candomble music that is used to summon the Orixás. The 13 selected songs from this album are some of the most commonly used in ceremonies, but are just a fraction of the hundreds of possible combinations.
